Vito Acconci

(24 Jan 1940 – 27 Apr 2017)

A critical perspective on the accustomed and familiar, resistance to preexisting, generally accepted, and plausible-seeming principles of order, violation of supposedly sensible and binding rules, and a near-obsessive passion for the unknown, experimental, and infinitely lawless would seem to be the salient characteristics of this global artist named Vito Acconci.

In his Viennese exhibition The City Inside Us (MAK, 1993), Vito Acconci carried out a vehement act of spatial intervention, a no-holds-barred externalization, a consciously executed exposure of his own self: a dramatic “look inward,” a battle against repressed subjectivity, and at the same time — in a surprising light — the impression of an anticipated reconciliation.
