Der Standard / Austrian Daily, Vienna, Jan 2023 – Maik Novotny "Kein Solostück"

Under the title "no solo piece - the carinthian Günther Domenig was considered a stubborn rebel of architecture. An exhibition now corrects the cliché of the lonely genius and retells his life through the biographies of his companions“, writes Maik Novotny in the prestigious austrian daily newspaper „Der Standard". Not entirely surprising, considering on the one hand the Zeitgeist and its fashion trends, a so-called "cancel culture", and on the other hand that Vienna obviously has no chance to escape the unbroken stigma of a provincial capital (pn).

© archive studio noever

Die Presse / Austrian Daily, 17.11.2022 - Almunth Spiegler „Das MAK MAK man eben?“ ("Do you like the MAK?")

Almuth Spiegler writes an essay under this title (a pun that can only be understood in German) and at the same time she titles the answer to it (with an adequate pun): "It would be better to talk about it!“ She refers to the new graphic CI and the associated advertising slogans.

(…) I like the MAK and I want to go in now," proclaims the huge banner that stretches across the street of the museum entrance. At the end of this hopeful advertising rainbow, at this entrance, it says "no entry". The potential MAK visitor is sent around the corner to the front entrance. However, there was a time, under director Peter Noever, when the side entrance was perceived as the main entrance, when today's British-Indian superstar Anish Kapoor thundered his lipstick cannon into the corner of the mighty exhibition hall. Or Franz West doused a Maserati with pink paint for the vernissage. 20 years ago. In retrospect, the discussion about what such contemporary art had to do with the MAK, of all places, seems a bit narrow-minded. The house was the subject of constant debate at the time and has nourished legends to this day. What more could a museum ask for? (…)

© archive studio no/ever

Falter 39/22, Matthias Dusini, Vienna 2022 © archive studio no/ever

For one day, designer and former MAK director Peter Noever opened his masterpiece to the public. This past Sunday, the "Heritage Day", it was possible to visit "The Pit / Die Grube", a land art project started in the early 1970s in Breitenbrunn on Lake Neusiedl. Among art and architecture connoisseurs, "Die Grube" is considered an insider tip, and rightly so, because what Noever and artist friends such as Walter Pichler have self-organized in the Pampa, is a sensation. There is hardly any other place where the interplay between sculpture, nature and architecture succeeds in this quality. The starting point is a wine cellar built of sandstone. Noever had the back opened, bringing light to the end of the tunnel. Then he cut a narrow passage leading on from the cellar into a hill. Steep stairs, bordered by whitewashed walls, lead up to the heights, an interplay between oppressive confinement and redeeming expanse opening up to the landscape.Gradually, minimalist sculptures emerged in the area rutted by rocks, pits, and hills, such as a field of concrete cubes reminiscent of Peter Eisenman's Berlin Holocaust Memorial. A bit of irony also resonates with the monumental self-realization. For example, the designer conceived an outhouse made of exposed concrete. The user climbs up steps as if onto a throne and does not have to be alone in the quiet lavatory - two openings are provided. The Federal Monuments Office placed "The Pit" under protection. Now is the time to make it available for museum-use - for a do-it-yourself project of world format.

Matthias Dusini is head of Feuilleton and would like to see a major Peter Noever exhibition.©

Peter Noever, Center for Understanding Media. Project for the Bombay Beach Biennale, 2019 presented at the Museum of Unwanted Architecture on the occasion of the Biennale (courtesy Marshall McLuhan, 1979 / Walter Pichler, 1970). In 1974 Noever visited Marshall McLuhan at the Center for Culture and Technology, University of Toronto. In 1979 they founded the Center for Understanding Media in Vienna together with ORF avant-garde program designers Hans Preiner and Barrington Nevitt (President: McLuhan). In 1972 Walter Pichler realized his sitting pits, his first stationary sculpture, in Noever’s land art project “The Pit”. This project for public space links the work of the sculptor with that of the media theorist. (published in “fair” magazine 01/2020)

“An Art Tour through the Land of Forced Smiles” — “Art is the only social force capable of overcoming boundaries” according to a quote by Peter Noever. As early as 2010, Noever presented the first major and comprehensive exhibition on North Korean (The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) art and architecture at the MAK in Vienna. To this day, this large-scale exhibition “Flowers for Kim Il Sung”, accompanied by a comprehensive catalog, represents a unique exploration of culture from this country.
„Raiding Project“ gibt Einblicke in Hagenbergs Arbeit.
Note from the editor: "Hopefully Peter Noever is not angry with us for making his face poisonous, since he lives in vienna, the baroque pearl on the danube, the city where waterworks supposedly want to switch completely to "heurigen" (wine) and know no poison problems. On the other hand, he can't be angry with us at all, since he vehmently advocates sensory thinking with his posters - that only works with in copore sano." (Excerpt from: ©️ peter noever, poster "design is thinking", Vienna 1980)
