Moments of Inspiration
Heritage Day 2025

September 28, 2025, 11–18h
Die Grube / The Pit, Breitenbrunn, Austria

The 2025 Heritage Day took place under the motto “Moments of Inspiration.”
With lively audience participation, there were art talks and interventions featuring the artists and musicians Franz Hautzinger, Josef Trattner, Burkhard Stangl, Billi Thanner, and Thomas Andreas Beck.

Aesthetic Fascinosum

When the beauty of art meets the beauty of nature in a constructive way, an aesthetic constellation emerges that may evoke in the fascinated viewer a feeling of contemplative calm.

The aesthetic fascinosum of such an installation corresponds to a spatial choreography that offers visitors an almost meditative view from within the depth of an abyss-like passage.

In this way, the walkable incision becomes absorbed into nature as an artistic path. It is up to the visitors to enter this path and experience the artwork.

- Herbert Lachmayer, philosopher and cultural theorist

The Pit – Biodiversit Hotspot

"The Pit" is a unique steppe landscape with an incredible diversity of insects and plant species.

However, dry habitats like "The Pit" are also among the most endangered ecosystems in Central Europe and are therefore maintained and protected by the Nature Conservation Association together with the landowner.

— Klaus Michalek, Director, Nature Conservation Association Burgenland

Unique Gesamtkunstwerk

The Pit is not only a unique Gesamtkunstwerk, but also, as a protected monument, represents the fascinating special case in which change and expansion, understood as a work in progress, actively contribute to its heritage value—according to the artistic concept of continuous development for this project, which originally emerged from a historic wine cellar.

— Peter Adam, Regional Conservator Burgenland / BDA

PERFORMANCES IN THE PIT / DIE GRUBE

Josef Trattner, Franz Hautzinger, Burkhard Stangl

The cube (foam, 40 x 40 x 40 cm) provides shelter and intimacy. Spaces open up in new and different ways.

Movement becomes a challenge; every step is questioned and considered. The music intensifies this state, allowing new forms of movement to emerge. Reflection and dialogue with oneself become inevitable and compelling. Spatial confinement generates new thoughts and creativity. “I am The Pit.”

---This, along with other aspects, was undertaken by Josef Trattner and convincingly realized with extensive audience participation.

HANGING SOFA
Josef Trattner, Franz Hautzinger

The quarry conveys a dialogue with the past. Hanging Sofa is intended as an act of remembrance for the numerous activities that have taken place on site. Houses, churches, and palaces have been built from this quarry. “Dialogue with and in the stone.”

---A dramatic performance set to the sounds of Franz Hautzinger.

INTERVENTION: SITTING PITS
Josef Trattner

Walter Pichler’s sculptures / sitting pits (1970) are fitted with foam cushions.

This elevates the theme of “taking a place,” making the use of the sitting pits more visible. Speaking and communication are stimulated through a vocal performance.

Vocal Performance: Thomas Andreas Beck
“Whoever wants to be famous in Austria is maddeningly small-minded.”

The doomed attempt at a love letter.

---Thomas succeeded in getting the guests of the “Heritage Day” to take a seat and received essential texts from them for the mentioned book project, thanking them with a signed protocol.

Artistic Intervention "The Line"
Billi Thanner created a light sculpture for the site.

Polished stainless steel tube, Ø 4.5 cm, LED warm white
Height: 3.10 m
24V / 60W

Billi Thanner’s light sculpture “The Line” was installed on the construction site for „Der Turm / The Tower“ (Peter Noever, 1990; 6 × 6 × 25 m) especially for this event. It serves as a visual sign in the landscape.
