MAK Center for Art and
Architecture, Los Angeles

Since 1994, the MAK Centers programs have returned the Schindler House and its activities to the forefront of the Los Angeles and international cultural scene. Through exhibitions, performances, lecture series and events, the MAK Center presents programs that reflect R.M. Schindlers spirit of cultural innovation. Celebrating the limitless potential of the Schindler House as an experimental project, the MAK Center continues to generate new collaborations with contemporary artists and architects.

The Schindler Artists and Architects-in-Residence program at the Pearl M. Mackey Apartments are central to an intense discourse on the interweaving of contemporary themes in art and architecture.

It is one of the most sought-after residency programs internationally. In the nearly 30 years since its founding, it has featured significant artists and architects. The MAK Center was founded by Peter Noever in 1994.

Today, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture includes 3 outstanding houses designed by the pioneering architect Rudolf M. Schindler.

Jochen Traar: Art Protects You, 1996, Los Angeles

Jochen Traar, (MAK Center Residence Artist) "Art Protects You", 1996. Traar equipped 14 pickup trucks, each with a 250 cm high red plastic letter. Read in the correct order, these were supposed to form the sentence ART PROTECTS YOU. The trucks were sent on a two-hour tour through the afternoon traffic of the californian freeways, where the drivers, through traffic-appropriate, complicated maneuvers attempted to form the specified lettering in convoy.
